Substance Abuse Counselor

JOB SUMMARY

Outpatient counseling in a substance abuse treatment program provides supportive services to enable the rehabilitation and reintegration of drug-dependent persons into society. The program primarily serves highly resistant clients obligated into treatment by referral to the Criminal Justice System. Extensive casework and paperwork requirements including entering information into multiple databases, group, and individual sessions. Evenings and weekend hours may apply.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Education and Experience:

  • Must be Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor (LCDC) by the state of Texas. Renewal of licensure is the responsibility of the employee, including fulfilling continuing educational requirements.
  • Minimum of an Associate degree in behavioral science (psychology, social work, guidance & counseling, etc.), and one year of full-time, supervised work experience in counseling and case file management, including some group and family counseling.
  • Without a college degree a minimum three years of full-time, supervised work experience in individual and group counseling (one of which must have been in substance abuse treatment) and case file management, database entry, and experience in using or willing to learn to use evidence-based curriculum.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish preferred)

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Good written and verbal communication skills including appropriate reflective listening skills.
  • Mastery of individual, group, and family counseling skills, including conflict resolution skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills to maintain rigorous schedules, file and database management, and treatment planning expectations.
  • Assessment and treatment planning skills.
  • Basic Microsoft Office Skills or a willingness to learn Outlook, Work and Excel within the first 60 days of employment (online classes are available through CRR).
  • Basic knowledge of online telehealth applications, or a willingness to learn and meet basic expectations within the first 60 days.
  • Knowledge of substance abuse, treatment resources, and can teach this knowledge to others.
  • Knowledge of the counseling process, methodologies, and treatment approaches.
DUTIES

Job Tasks:

  • Perform intake interviews on prospective clients to determine appropriateness for program admission.
  • Develop and initiate ongoing review of an individualized treatment regime for each client, which includes needs assessments and goal attainment planning to ensure the client receives needed services.
  • Refer clients to other agencies to receive additional needed services not offered by CRR including and ensure follow-up of accessing those services as appropriate.
  • Report on client participation in program to referral source in agreement with the client release of information, and consistent with confidentiality regulations.
  • Complete and maintain accurate client files consistent with funding and program guidelines, including written needs assessment, client progress notes, goal attainment plans, urinalysis logs, release of information forms, monthly reports to parole/probation officer, etc.
  • Schedule, observe, and process client urine specimens to determine drug use status.
  • Complete accurate daily and monthly records of client activity in the program to provide data for program evaluation.
  • Attend supervisory sessions to receive feedback and direction on job performance.
  • Participate in staff meetings for program operations, information, and problem solving.
  • Attend training session to improve job knowledge and promote personal development.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Implement policies, best practices, guidance, standards to create framework for effective services.
  • Implement department programming and selected service model.
  • Understand and implements program /department organizational development to increase efficacy, better services, and outcomes.
  • Use and ensure the compliance of all protocols as required by funding sources.
  • Complete and submit timely and accurate documentation; financial/program paperwork, forms, letters, surveys, reports, meeting notes, and all other required correspondence, ensuring it is according to departmental standards.
  • Knowledge of general office practices and procedures and uses them effectively to streamline work.
  • Report to the program supervisor on the overall successes and issues regarding program.
  • Through the Quality Management Program look for ways to improve and promote quality; demonstrates accuracy and thoroughness.

  • Follow all regulatory requirements for reporting suspected abuse or neglect.
